Greg Herold-Howes

GREG HEROLD-HOWES

Greg is an Advocate of the Royal Court of Jersey and an English Solicitor (currently non-practising), specialising in criminal and civil litigation. Called to the Bar in 2022 after a decade in legal practice, he has a growing reputation as a trusted and formidable litigator who combines technical rigour with sound judgment and practical insight.

An accredited criminal practitioner, he appears regularly before Jersey’s courts in matters involving violence, sexual allegations, drugs, fraud, regulatory offending, and sensitive domestic cases. He is frequently instructed in cases where evidential and procedural issues are critical and is adept at identifying and advancing points on admissibility, disclosure and expert evidence which can prove decisive. He is closely involved from the first police interview through to trial and appeal, ensuring that cases are shaped rather than simply defended.

Greg has experience in cases involving mental health, vulnerability, and capacity. He acts for clients where issues such as trauma, addiction, neurodivergence or psychiatric illness are central to both the alleged offending and the Court’s approach to disposal. He works closely with medical experts and Probation to ensure these issues are properly understood and reflected in bail, case management, and sentencing.

Greg is known for a calm, direct, and empathetic advocacy style which puts both clients and the Court at ease. Clients value his ability to combine technical authority with clarity and reassurance, particularly in sensitive and emotionally charged cases, while the Court relies on him to present difficult issues with precision and control.

Alongside his criminal work, Greg maintains a wide-ranging civil and commercial litigation practice. He advises on contractual and shareholder disputes, construction and professional negligence claims, insolvency and enforcement, property and landlord-and-tenant litigation, and contentious probate disputes. Much of this work involves urgent or sensitive issues, including asset protection and disputes arising from allegations of dishonesty or regulatory breach.

Greg also advises in matters of public law, including judicial review proceedings in areas such as immigration and planning. He has acted in long running and multi-party disputes involving Island Plan interpretation and tribunal decisions and is frequently consulted on the prospects and strategy of challenging or defending administrative acts.

Outside work, Greg is a keen runner, cyclist and sea-swimmer, and an enthusiastic home baker. A former rugby captain, he still follows the game closely – mostly from the touchline.
